A Journey into Portugal’s Past (and One of the Coolest Festivals Around)
Every July, the little town of Óbidos pulls off something incredible. Its cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and medieval castle come alive with knights, nobles, minstrels, and torchlight. It’s called the Feira Medieval de Óbidos, and if you’ve never been, just trust me — it’s like stepping into a movie, but better, because it’s real.

If you’re coming to Portugal in July 2025, this is one of the events you don’t want to miss. I’ll explain why — and how I can help you get there — but first, let’s talk about the place itself.
A bit about Óbidos
Óbidos isn’t just the backdrop for a festival. It’s one of Portugal’s most beautiful and historic towns — a perfectly preserved medieval village that still sits inside its original stone walls.
It was once a royal gift: in 1282, King Dinis gave the entire town to Queen Isabel as a wedding present. That started a tradition where Óbidos belonged to the queens of Portugal for centuries — earning it the nickname “the town of queens.”
Today, it’s known for its charming alleys, blooming bougainvillea, and signature drink — ginjinha, a cherry liqueur usually served in a tiny chocolate cup. (Yes, that’s as good as it sounds.)
The town itself feels like a living museum. Add a festival to that, and you’ve got something truly special.
The Medieval Fair — What to Expect
From July 17 to 27, 2025, Óbidos transforms into a medieval village in every sense:
Actors and musicians in full costume roam the streets
Jousting tournaments and swordplay erupt in the town square
Fires burn, meats roast, mead flows
There are no plastic cups or modern ads — just wooden mugs, straw on the ground, and pure atmosphere
Each year has a theme, and 2025 focuses on the story of Pedro and Inês — a royal romance that ended in tragedy, betrayal, and one of the most powerful love stories in Portuguese history. Expect dramatic reenactments and lots of storytelling.
Other Festivals worth knowing
Óbidos may be small, but it doesn’t sleep. If you can’t make it in July, the town hosts incredible events all year long:
International Chocolate Festival (usually in spring)
A dream come true for kids and chocolate lovers alike. Sculptures, tastings, workshops — all inside the town walls. Yes, you’ll eat too much. That’s the point.
Christmas Village – Vila Natal (December)
Óbidos turns into a snowy fairytale in winter, complete with lights, a Santa’s village, ice skating, and mulled wine. Magical for families. Honestly? Magical for everyone.
FOLIO – Literary Festival (autumn)
For the book lovers. Talks, readings, and cultural events take over the village in a slower, thoughtful vibe.
Óbidos has reinvented itself as a year-round destination by leaning into its strengths: beauty, history, and a great sense of drama.

Getting there — The easy way
During events like the Medieval Fair, Óbidos gets busy. Parking is tough, buses are packed, and group coordination gets tricky.
That’s where I come in.
I offer private day tours to Óbidos, especially during festivals. You get:
Private van for up to 8 guests
Pick-up and drop-off from Lisbon
Stress-free travel, with room for costumes, bags, chocolate, and whatever else you collect
Optional detours to nearby beaches, vineyards, or viewpoints — just ask
A friendly local guide who knows how to avoid the crowds (that’s me)
